The Battle Of ?

There is a search for glory, a dream to be believed

There is a quest, immortality to be achieved

There is a perfect moment, where the dream is to be taken

And if it is gone, then one is to be left forsaken

To take our share we crossed the shores

Eighty men, divided into fours

The veterans were there, along with the new breed

In the end though, all men of the same seed

Crisp orders met with a quick "Sir yes sir"

The enemy's in sight, a distant blur

The plan is simple, engage and assault

The fear of disgrace, and it being your fault

The bugle sounds and the nightmare turns real

I crush a man beneath me and hear him squeal

"There are plenty more for you to crush, son"

The General said, toasting me with his gun

The sun shined as the battle raged on

Cloth was hanging off bones as skin was torn

I turned around and heard a sickening thud

I saw a severed head and glistening blood

So we shot and we killed and we saw our friends die

Then the vultures came and they circled the sky

We were losing but defeat was not a choice

"Attack", the order was given with a defeated voice

'We'll make it through this", an old hand assured

"Don't let me die here", a young man implored

Backup was on its way, it was our only hope

As we took cover further up the slope

Miraculously, we survived the next twelve hours

Surely not without the help of some divine power

Victory was in sight, and the backup wouldn't be long

But the time passed by, clearly something was wrong

Command had abandoned our regiment, the messenger was told

We had been sold down the river, left out in the cold

The cost was too great, the risk was too high

And the entire backup story was a lie

So we cursed the enemy and we cursed the state

We thought of strategies, but it was too late

Our dreams broken; as the enemy marched up the hill

Not a word spoken; as they took aim and prepared for the kill

  1. Looks like you've had an overdose of Wilfred Owen. Good expression though.
